Susant Kumar Das

Since childhood, Odisha-based sculptor Susant Kumar Das was drawn towards spirituality. As he came of age, he realized he can express his devotion towards the almighty through art. He started creating marvelous sculptures of gods and goddesses.

Now that over 20 years have passed, Susant has achieved excellence. You can view some of his masterpieces in many temples across India. His carvings could also be witnessed on the walls and other aspects of temple buildings. A lot of his works also highlight the rich culture and heritage of India.

Some Notable Works Include:

  • Ambedkar Statue at Sanskriti Bhawan, Jaipur (Rajasthan)
  • Kushana Saraswati Temple, Jaipur (Rajasthan)
  • Kali Temple, Digha (West Bengal)

To make his works more accessible to the public, he started sculpting statues for different gardens. The explorers find his artworks quite soothing when walking in the lap of nature.

Thanks to his contributions in the field of sculpture, Susant has received many accolades. He was the recipient of Kalakruti Award 2019 from the Odisha Government. Other honours include “SILPI GOURAB” Award 2018, Certificate from Ambedkar Foundation, and …….

For the last six years, he has been training the next generation of sculptors. Through this venture, he aims to accomplish the mission of restoring the glory of this artform.

Born in Odisha, Susant Kumar Das, the son of a bicycle mechanic, was drawn to spirituality from a young age. His deep connection to the divine sparked a passion for expressing his devotion through art.

As he matured, Susant discovered his gift for stone carving, a craft rooted in Odisha’s 13th-century Kalinga School. With soft stone, red sandstone, and granite, he sculpted intricate gods and goddesses, each piece a blend of skill and reverence. Over 20 years, his dedication transformed him into a master sculptor.

National Recognition

Susant’s perseverance earned him a National Award, a testament to his artistry and commitment. His journey from humble beginnings to national acclaim embodies the spirit of passion and resilience.

Shining at Surajkund Mela

His inspiring story was highlighted at the 38th Surajkund International Crafts Mela (Feb 7-23, 2025, Faridabad), where Odisha’s stone-carving heritage dazzled alongside Madhya Pradesh’s crafts. Among 2,500 artisans from India and BIMSTEC nations, Susant’s work likely captivated visitors, showcasing the timeless beauty of traditional Indian art.
